Sustainability programs have been adopted by many large, publicly-owned chemical companies in Europe, Japan and the US, and even by large companies in China and India. These programs aim to improve the industry s image and public trustworthiness, which sank to historic depths in the late 1980s or early 1990s and are still relatively low.
