The implications of malfunctioning muscles has become an important topic in respiratory medicine. Respiratory muscles are severely affected, for example, by emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which are primarily diseases of the lung. Muscle malfunction can lead to severe dyspnoea and failure of the ventilatory pump. It seems remarkable that, while some aspects of skeletal muscle function are investigated by molecular biology techniques to find new answers, too little is still known about respiratory muscle interaction.
