This book examines the role of gender in political conflicts worldwide, with particular attention paid to the intersection between gender and terrorism as well as the impact that war, genocide/state terror, and terrorism has on men and women. In so doing, the book seeks to (1) introduce students to the difference between sex and gender; (2) explain how gender roles are manifested in violent conflict; (3) explicate the difference between genocide and gendercide; and (4) explore how terrorism intersects with gender at multiple levels in society, including how gender influences the individual terrorist, social groups, elites and the public participating in or responding to terror. The brief is separated into four sections: The first section examines women as victims of violence and terrorism. Second, it examines women as perpetrators of violence and terrorism. Third, the role of women in social groups acting as supporters and denouncers of violence and terrorism is examined. Finally, it looks at women as policymakers and men and women in the electorate responding to violence and terrorism. Each section draws upon the authors original research on women and terrorism as related to the Basque case and ETA, thus providing consistency throughout the brief while also drawing upon contemporary and historical cases which allow comparative conclusion to be drawn, making the book of interest to scholars across many areas including political science, sociology, gender studies and terrorism/security.
