UnBehavior
The Right Definition of Behavior Explains Mouse Utopia

In 1968, a scientist built a paradise for mice. Unlimited food. Unlimited water. Perfect climate. No predators. No disease. Room for thousands. The colony flourished-then stopped reproducing, withdrew, and died out while the food hoppers stayed full and a fifth of the nest boxes sat empty.

For fifty years the story has been told as a parable of overcrowding. It is not. The pen was never full. When mice were removed to spacious new enclosures, they did not recover. Something deeper had been broken.

This book supplies the missing definition. Behavior is not merely what an animal does. It is selection: an animal weighing what its options would produce and choosing among them in its own interest, toward a preferred outcome. Cut the link between what an organism does and what becomes of it, and the machinery of conduct comes apart-component by component. Personality fails to form. The sense of what matters drains or misfires. Beliefs cannot be learned. Inherited pressures fire into a world that no longer answers. The self itself thins.

Universe 25 was not a failed utopia. It was a machine for severing consequence coupling. The same cut is now being made, more quietly, in human institutions and technologies. The mice could not diagnose their condition. We can.

UnBehavior is the first full application of Applied Evolutionary Ethology to the most famous unexplained experiment in behavioral science. It is precise where popular accounts are vague, mechanistic where moral readings are circular, and falsifiable where both have been content to gesture. It does not ask you to accept a worldview. It asks you to test a definition.

If the definition is right, the collapse of the mouse utopia was predictable. So is much of what is happening to us.

Part Two of the Applied Evolutionary Ethology series.
