Anotace knihy

Humanity remains a biological species. It also builds the institutions through which it lives and the physical and digital extensions through which it acts. These can change on timescales far shorter than inherited biological adaptation. Triadic Evolution provides a framework for understanding how all three develop together.

The book examines the evolution of sociotechnical species through three interacting strands: Evolution by Natural Selection, Evolution by Organization, and Evolution by Extension. Natural selection continues to shape biological organisms and populations. Organization changes culture, institutions, authority, roles, and collective learning. Extension changes tools, infrastructure, software, automation, and artificial intelligence.

From this foundation, Triadic Evolution develops a wider architecture of sociotechnical life. It distinguishes three realms of activity-social, physical, and digital-and two responsibility-bearing actors: sociotechnical agents and sociotechnical units. It then shows how those actors form three different kinds of order: Ecosystemic Order through coexistence, Conditioned Order through regulation, and Systemic Order through integration.

At the center of the framework is a problem created by expanding technological capability. As action moves outward through increasingly powerful and autonomous extensions, where do authority and responsibility remain? The book argues that capability can be distributed without allowing responsibility to disappear. Organization must preserve identifiable authority, answerability, and correctability: the continuing ability to detect, question, stop, revise, repair, and verify consequential action.

The analysis extends from culture and organizational learning to artificial intelligence, technological governance, competing visions of civilization, and adaptive exploration beyond Earth. Humanity can influence the conditions under which its evolution unfolds, but no single actor steers civilization as a whole. Candidate futures must therefore be pursued through bounded missions that remain provisional, pluralistic, and correctable.

Written as a scientific manifesto, conceptual architecture, synthesis, and research program, Triadic Evolution connects evolutionary biology, organizational theory, sociotechnical systems, systems safety, technology governance, and long-term foresight.
