Tille Hoyuk was excavated between 1979 and 1990 by the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara as part of the Turkish Lower Euphrates Rescue Project. The site, standing at a crossing of the Euphrates, reveals important remains of the Late Bronze and Iron Ages, and of the Achaemenid and Hellenistic periods, as well as the medieval phase presented in this volume. During the 12th to 15th centuries AD the top of the mound was occupied by the fortified residence of a local chieftain and at its peak it consisted of two-storeyed buildings with associated courtyards, a bath-house and a large cistern, all protected by a well-built defensive wall. Sites of the same type were probably fairly numerous, but this is the only one to be fully and systematically excavated. This volume contains a discussion of the methodology and stratigraphy of the excavation, followed by full catalogues of the pottery, metal and other objects and coins.
