Every neighborhood has a legend. This is how one begins.
Cleveland, summer 1988.
Fifteen-year-old Sonny Boy Payne has spent three years living in the shadow of his murdered father, a former baseball star turned neighborhood reformer. When his charismatic uncle Breland "Cool Breeze" Clark offers to drive him to Minneapolis to meet the girl he has known only through letters and late-night phone calls, Sonny sees the trip as his chance to finally step into a larger life.
His best friends come along for the ride: Koko, sharp-eyed and unwilling to accept anybody else's version of the truth, and Shoe, a sheltered doctor's son hiding his uncertainty behind expensive sneakers. Together, they pile into Breland's cardinal-red 1979 Thunderbird and head west toward Prince, professional wrestling, motel rooms, gas-station candy, and the kind of freedom they have only imagined.
But Breland is carrying more than three kids across the Midwest.
A black Oldsmobile keeps appearing behind them. A dangerous debt waits back in Cleveland. And the memory of Sonny's father rides in the passenger seat, forcing Breland to confront the choices that turned him from a decorated Marine into one of the neighborhood's most trusted hustlers.
As the road unfolds, each stop becomes a lesson in manhood, loyalty, family, fear, and survival. The children believe they are on the adventure of their lives. Breland is driving like a man who knows every good memory has a price.
Set against the music, style, humor, danger, and complicated hope of Black life in the late 1980s, Thunderbird & Kool-Aid is a cinematic coming-of-age novel about the myths families create, the damage men inherit, and the moment childhood realizes the adults were never fully in control.
