The story follows three young boys, Rob McIntyre, Jesse Wilcox, and John Hardy, who embark on an unexpected journey to Kadiak Island. Initially, the boys are excited about the prospect of exploring new territories and experiencing the thrill of the Alaskan wilderness. Their journey begins when they board the steamer _Yucatan_ with Uncle Dick, who is on a government survey mission. However, their adventure takes an unexpected turn when they become separated from Uncle Dick in a dense fog and find themselves adrift in a dory on the open sea.
