Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Oliver Goldsmith: With a Life of the Poet As will be seen from the following "Advertisement," this edition of Goldsmith's Life and Poems was materially revised in 1866. At the request of the Publishers, it has now been again carefully examined. By the omission of much that has either become obsolete, or has been proved by recent investigations to he inaccurate, the Life has been abridged. Some of the footnotes have been withdrawn and others substituted; the quotations have been verified wherever practicable; and the style in general has been compressed. The Poems, in nearly every instance, have been collated anew with the original issues, although it has not been thought necessary to follow the variable and arbitrary punctuation of those issues.
