Among several interpretations of the nature of modern philosophy, there are those which consider it to be a history of subjectivism that is crucially rooted in detaching epistemology from ontology of the self, and maintain that contemporary thought has suffered from the weight of difficulties raised by such detachment. In this book, Mahmoud Khatami presents his notion of the 'ontetic self' trough a huge interpretation of the Persian School of Transcendent Philosophy (al-Hikmat al-Muta aliyah)and contemporary Western phenomenological school; then he examines whether this notion can contribute to eliminate the crucial aspects of modern subjectivism which are problematically hidden in this detachment. The book should be useful for those who are interested in the philosophical debates on modernity, modern philosophy, comparative philosophy, and Islamic-Persian philosophy.
