Anotace knihy

Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, would become remembered by history as the Kingmaker, the great magnate who helped put one king on the English throne and then helped remove him. But behind the legend lies a more complicated story of royal ambition, aristocratic power and a political alliance that ultimately tore itself apart.

The Yorkist victory at Towton in 1461 appeared to have settled England's dynastic struggle. Edward IV was young, charismatic and victorious, while Warwick stood beside him as one of the most powerful noblemen in the kingdom. Together they had helped destroy Lancastrian control and establish a new monarchy.

Victory, however, exposed tensions that war had concealed.

Edward increasingly intended to rule as an independent king. His secret marriage to Elizabeth Woodville transformed the royal court, the rise of the Woodville family challenged established interests, and disagreements over France and Burgundy placed Edward and Warwick on opposing sides of English foreign policy.

George, Duke of Clarence, added royal ambition to the conflict. Rebellion followed. The royal army was defeated at Edgecote, Edward was briefly held by his former ally, and an attempted reconciliation collapsed into renewed conspiracy and exile.

Then came one of the most extraordinary reversals of the Wars of the Roses.

Warwick abandoned the Yorkist dynasty he had helped create and formed an alliance with his former enemy, Margaret of Anjou. In 1470 he returned to England, drove Edward IV into exile and restored Henry VI to the throne.

The Kingmaker: Warwick, Edward IV and the Fracturing of York explores the decade in which Yorkist triumph turned into civil war within the victorious dynasty, revealing both the extraordinary reach of Warwick's power and the limits that ultimately made his greatest triumph dangerously fragile.

That description reflects the manuscript's central argument that Warwick's power was formidable but always dependent upon kingship, coalition and wider political cooperation.
