Taking India's Kumaon Himalaya as an example, this book examines how a marginalized community, the Bhotiyas, has substantially influenced the manner in which this high mountain border region gained presence and reconfigured its shape as an imperial environment under British colonial rule. The sealing of the border between India and China in 1962 had far-reaching effects on resident communities on both sides. The author discusses how they reworked the inherent spatiality of their ethnic relations and asserted an identity in a post-colonial world of national sovereignty; and how they negotiated their mobility to meet the challenges and to seize the opportunities of a modernizing and market-oriented mountain region. The book ties in with current debates on borderlands and transboundary environments, offering several key lessons for future research on the multidimensional and historically contingent border regions of the Himalaya.§
