Anotace knihy

Dental Care Utilization can be classified as one ofthree types of treatments administered by a dentist:Restorative, Preventative, and Cosmetic Care. In aPh.D. Dissertation from the University of Kentucky,the author explores the simultaneous choice betweenthese three types of care using a MultivariateProbit Model using the GHK Simulator andNumeric Integration. Data for the research werefrom the National Medical Expenditure Survey of 1987which samples households in the United States. Thedataset includes information regarding demographic,socioeconomic and medical expenses on a daily basisfor the calandar year 1987, which were aggregated toquarterly utilization measurements. Simultaneousprobit models reveal interesting patterns ofutilization. One finding regarding preventative careis that consumption of preventative care in thecurrent period would be associated with asignificantly lower utilization of both Restorativeand Cosmetic care in the next period. Anotherinteresting finding is that Restorative and Cosmeticcare are substitutes for each other. Cosmetic caremight be a luxury good relative to Restorative care.
