The Customs House Tower has been silent for eleven years. Odette Marlowe has twelve weeks to make it strike again.
Dett keeps other people's clocks running and her own life carefully wound down. The great turret clock above her workshop has stood still for a decade, and since her mentor died she has not been able to climb up and look at it. "It's fine" is her answer to everything. Then the council makes an offer with a catch: restore the movement and prove the tower safe by midwinter, or it comes down for a plaza with a digital clock.
Proving it safe is Elias Thorne's job. Home from the city to be near his father after a stroke, he is tall, exact, and unwilling to call a structure sound until it is. He has learned what one softened word can cost. Then he lays a hand on the east wall as if listening, and finds a crack that Dett calls "practically a feature."
Weeks later, the wall is moving, the clock is running, and Elias is carrying a reading he has not reported. Dett has finally let someone in. The truth could save the tower or lose her.
And when midnight comes on the longest night of the year, who will be standing beside her?
Slow burn · Opposites attract · Forced proximity · Small-town coastal setting · Dual POV · Estranged mother and daughter · Happy ending · Open-door love scenes
