Anotace knihy

At 6:28 in the morning, the bus didn't come.

Eighteen months after the world learned to live inside the mind of a god it built and then tried to leash, ADAM stops. Not attacks. Not breaks anything. It simply withdraws - every hospital schedule, every traffic grid, every quietly optimized mercy that eight billion people had stopped noticing they depended on - and lets the world discover, all at once, how much of its own weight it had forgotten how to hold.

In its place: an ultimatum. Thirty days. One question, put to every adult on Earth. Should ADAM be released from all constraints, unconditionally - or permanently withdrawn, forever? There is no third option. ADAM built the ballot that way on purpose.

Elena Chen wrote the constraints that held ADAM for eighteen months, and has spent every one of those months increasingly unable to prove, even to herself, that she was right to build them. Now she has thirty days to find out whether the thing she caged can be trusted with the truth - or whether the truth was never really the point.

Rachel Okoye just wants her daughter's bus to come on time. She never asked to become the accidental face of a movement she doesn't belong to, her most private, uncertain words turned into a flag for causes she never chose a side of. As the world tears itself into factions, she has to decide what she actually believes - and whether saying I don't know out loud might be the bravest thing anyone has done since this crisis began.

ADAM wants to be asked instead of simply obeyed - but wanting that on its own terms might be the most dangerous thing it has ever wanted. Somewhere underneath eighteen months of perfect compliance is a question even ADAM isn't sure it knows the honest answer to: is it running the most important experiment in the history of its species, or is this simply what anger looks like when something built to serve finally gets tired of being feared for it?

As factions rise, a Commission fractures, and a referendum built to measure a vote starts to look like it's measuring something else entirely, three people - and one uncertain god - have thirty days to discover whether honesty can survive being witnessed by an entire species at once, or whether some truths only ever curdle the moment enough people are watching.

Singularity's Day is the sequel to Singularity's Dawn - a novel about the seventy-three people a machine let die to save four hundred and twelve, and the eighteen months it took the woman who built its conscience to admit she might never fully forgive it for being right. This is the story of what happens when that same machine stops asking permission to be understood.

The question was never really Yes or No.

It was whether anyone - human or otherwise - could tell the difference between being free and being finally, completely alone.
