A seizure can be frightening.
For some people, it happens without warning. One moment everything feels normal, and the next there may be confusion, staring, loss of awareness, unusual movements, stiffening, or shaking.
For family members and witnesses, seeing a seizure for the first time can be equally frightening.

Was that a seizure?

A Seizure and Epilepsy Are Not the Same Thing
One of the most important lessons in this book is simple:
A seizure is an event. Epilepsy is a neurological condition.
A person can experience a seizure without having epilepsy.
A temporary medical problem such as severe low blood sugar, an electrolyte disturbance, a high fever, an acute brain injury, certain medication effects, or alcohol withdrawal may sometimes trigger a seizure.
When the underlying problem is corrected, another seizure may never occur.
Epilepsy is different.

Seizures Do Not Always Look Like Shaking
Many people picture a seizure as someone falling to the floor and shaking violently.
That is only one type of seizure.
Some seizures are extremely subtle.
A person may:

• stare for several seconds
• stop responding
• become confused
• experience an unusual smell or taste
• feel sudden fear
• see flashing lights
• experience brief muscle jerks
• make repetitive movements
• temporarily lose awareness

Some people remain awake and remember everything that happened.
Others may have no memory of the event.
Learning about the different seizure types can help patients and families recognize symptoms that might otherwise be missed.
Why Diagnosis Matters
Not every unusual episode is epilepsy.
Fainting, migraines, sleep disorders, certain heart problems, movement disorders, metabolic problems, and functional neurological events can sometimes resemble seizures.
This is why proper medical evaluation is so important.
Doctors may use:

• medical history
• witness descriptions
• neurological examinations
• blood tests
• EEG testing
• MRI scans
• CT scans
• video monitoring
• seizure diaries

Sometimes the diagnosis is clear quickly.
Other times it takes repeated testing and careful observation.
The goal is not simply to put a label on the person.
The goal is to understand what is happening so the right treatment can be chosen.
Treatment Has Improved
Epilepsy treatment has changed greatly over the years.
Many people achieve excellent seizure control with antiseizure medication.
There are now numerous medications available, allowing doctors to choose treatment based on the seizure type, age, health conditions, possible side effects, and other factors.
When medicine does not provide enough control, additional options may be available.
