Anotace knihy

"Based on a true story, Scrub Oak is a well-written tale of fractured childhood in drought-ravaged Oklahoma during the Great Depression. With love, laughter and the power of human kindness sprinkled throughout, the book is a testimony to one girl's remarkable resilience, optimism and good fortune. Author Georgia Carter Smith brings a dark time in United States history to life with memorable characters and vivid descriptions of rural life in the Dust Bowl days. This beautifully told story of survival despite heart-breaking loss, illustrates the resilience of the American spirit and the power of never, ever giving up. Highly recommended." Anne Hillerman, New York Times Best Selling Author of the Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito mysteries

"This beautifully written story gives a warm and witty reflection of a life well lived, despite the hardships thrown her way early in life. A must read for anyone yearning to learn more about life in mid-America in the 20th century". Jane Butel
Jane Butel, author of numerous books, and host of the Create Network show, Jane Butel's Southwestern Kitchen.

Georgia Carter Smith was born in 1926, one of five children to farmers in Oklahoma. The Great Depression hit them hard and after their father died, the youngest children in the family were left in the care of the Tulsa Home for Children. After a sketchy adoption and subsequent return to the orphanage, Georgia became homeless at the age of twelve, before finding her "forever home" and family as a teenager. Georgia always believed that her mother would return for her and continued to search for her throughout her life. The lessons she learned along the way will forever capture your heart and take you back to times that many of us cannot imagine living. "Scrub Oak" is a story of resilience and survival. Georgia Carter Smith wrote "Scrub Oak" while in her seventies. Although her hand-written notes were found scattered throughout her home after her passing, her stories had been shared and told many times over. Scrub Oak is a work of fiction that started with the real- life memories of Georgia Carter Smith, which will engulf the readers in a swarm of emotions and fill the hearts of the readers with hope.
