Anotace knihy

Robots in Space Exploration tells the extraordinary story of the machines humanity has sent to the farthest corners of the solar system and what they found when they got there.

From the simple beeping sphere of Sputnik to the nuclear-powered laboratory of Curiosity crawling across Martian craters, from the Venera landers that survived the crushing inferno of Venus to the Voyager probes now sailing through interstellar space, this book chronicles six decades of robotic exploration that transformed our understanding of the universe we inhabit.

Written for anyone who has ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what lies beyond, it tells the stories of the machines themselves their triumphs and their failures, their unexpected discoveries and their heartbreaking losses alongside the stories of the human beings who built them, operated them, and grieved them when they finally went silent.

It is the story of Opportunity, a rover designed to last ninety days that kept driving for fifteen years until a dust storm finally ended its journey, and of Cassini, a spacecraft that spent thirteen years revealing the wonders of Saturn before plunging deliberately into the planet's atmosphere rather than risk contaminating the moons it had come to know.

It is the story of how ancient water was found on Mars, how a subsurface ocean was discovered beneath the ice of Europa, how the first photographs were taken from the surface of another planet, and how a tiny helicopter named Ingenuity became the first aircraft ever to fly on another world.

It is the story of the engineers and scientists who refused to accept that the impossible could not be done who built machines capable of surviving Venus's crushing heat, Saturn's lethal radiation belts, and the absolute cold of the outer solar system and of the robotic systems now being designed to clean up the debris cluttering Earth orbit, build habitats on the lunar surface, and eventually prepare Mars for the arrival of human beings.

It is, above all, a story about curiosity the specifically human compulsion to know what lies beyond the next horizon, to extend the map, to go to places no one has been before and about the remarkable machines we build to satisfy that compulsion in environments where our own bodies cannot survive.

The solar system described in these pages is incomparably richer and stranger than anything anyone imagined before the first robotic explorers arrived to tell us what was actually there a place of volcanic moons and methane lakes and ancient river valleys and organic chemistry and possible life, a place that is still revealing its secrets to the patient, persistent, tireless machines we continue to send.

The robots are still out there. The exploration is still underway. And the most important discoveries may still lie ahead in the sealed sample tubes that Perseverance is collecting on the floor of an ancient Martian lake, in the plumes of Enceladus waiting to be sampled by a future spacecraft, in the ocean beneath Europa's ice that may, against all the odds and across all the distance, turn out not to be empty after all.

This is the story of the greatest adventure our species has ever undertaken told through the machines that made it possible, and through the very human need to reach for something just beyond the limit of what we can currently touch.
