Anotace knihy

Previous studies suggest a relationship between parenting styles and risky behaviors such as substance abuse. The present study focused on two specific dimensions of parenting styles: behavioral control and warmth/responsiveness. Do ratings of parents on these dimensions predict adolescent risk perception and participation in potentially risky activities? Specifically, which dimensions of parenting styles predict participation in physical risk taking, and how is the relationship modified by the use of (or lack of) safety equipment? With the use of illustrations, 41 adolescents completed a questionnaire about recreational activities, and answered 6 questions measuring risk perception, risk frequency, parental responsivity, and behavioral approval. The findings of the 2007 study are valuable in identifying adolescents who must be at a high priority for educational intervention with respect to risky recreation, in an effort to promote a decrease in unintentional injuries in the population.
