Anotace knihy

Pushing the Limits takes modern poetry to a new level and beyond. In his second book, Lyon shares more than sixty poems that jump off the page and into your heart and mind. Lyon looks at life in a way that stretches the imagination, and the poetic forms that he embraces infuse words with inspirational meaning. His poems are often like a mystery that needs to be solved, and the traces of humor throughout make the reader's journey enjoyable. As Robert McDowell observed:

"Pushing the Limits is a 'day in the life' witnessing that many can and will identify with. I am impressed by the witnessing we often get here about aging and stepping into the mentor's time of life. We need more poems and art like that."

Some of these poems follow particular forms, schemes, and structures. You will find Alcaic stanzas, a villanelle, a sonnet, a ghazal, a rondeau, a chastushka, a sestina, and a haiku. Other poems have a variety of rhyme schemes and poetic devices. Some lines will stand out, like, "Life flows on like an IV drip," and "There is no humor in a dead heart." Some poems are fun, others somber. Some disturbing, some perplexing, others depicting loss where there are no words. Blending poetic forms with reflection on personal history and the everyday, Lyon's poetry transforms the mundane into something more profound with striking relatability.

Pushing the Limits spans three sections: At First Sight, On Second Thought, and At Peace. The sections progress as does life from early beginnings to maturity. The poem "Always Under Construction" is at the heart of this book. Lyon makes it very clear in the line, "I live my life a work in progress." Every poem provokes thought, and in Pushing the Limits, Lyon develops a vision that grows out of itself. His view on writing poetry is expressed in lines that appear at the beginning of the book:

"A poem is the little bird that flew into my patio glass door,

Lying dazed and bewildered on the cold concrete.

It came back to life, looked me in the eye,

Shook its wings, and flew away."

Pushing the Limits, a bold and evocative collection, explores the edges of human experience, where emotion, memory, and imagination collide. Each piece dares to cross conventional boundaries while delving into themes of resilience, risk, and transformation with unflinching honesty. From quiet reflections on aging and identity to portraits of love, loss, and renewal, the poems encourage readers to step beyond comfort zones and confront what lies on the other side. With vivid imagery and striking language, Pushing the Limits invokes a journey through the depths of the heart and the heights of possibility.
