You install the gear. Someone else gets paid to prove it works.
Acceptance testing and commissioning is the other side of the electrical trade: you arrive after the switchgear, transformers and protective devices are installed, and you prove - with instruments, under load - that they will do what they are supposed to do when it matters. For an electrician who likes diagnosis more than installation, it is a genuine change of career, not just a change of employer.
It is also the most rigorously documented path in this series, which is why it is worth writing honestly. NETA certification is not a licence, and it is employer-gated: NETA states that certified technicians are employed by NETA Accredited Companies, and that accredited set is only a few hundred firms. Any book that implies you can simply go and get certified on your own is misleading you.
This field guide maps the real route: what the work is and how a job actually runs, the levels and what each requires, how to identify and approach accredited companies, how to translate installation experience into testing language, and what the training and progression look like once you're in.
It is equally clear about the trade-offs, because they self-select people out and you should know before you commit: heavy travel, per-diem life, night and weekend outages, on-call, and a smaller employer pool than any other title in this cluster. That is the price of the most transferable diagnostic skill set in the trade.
Every claim is sourced and dated. Pay appears only where an employer publishes a band or a pay-transparency posting states one, with the city and the date it was captured. Licensing and safety are signposted throughout - state electrical licensure still applies, NFPA 70E qualified-person status remains an employer determination, and nothing here authorises you to work on energised equipment. An Australian appendix covers the different regime there.
Same gear. Different question. You get paid to answer it.
