Just like any human behaviour, the use of the language is arbitrary and therefore unconfined to any rules. It is not the grammar that governs the language but contrarily the language governs the grammar. This is the reason that grammar books contain exceptions. Consequently, at places language teaching becomes difficult, especially in an 'other' tongue (different from the 'mother' tongue) situation. It is not like using the language as a driver does but analysing and explaining the language just as a mechanic does. The book contains five perplexing topics of grammar (viz. Phrases : Form and Function, Verbs and Tenses, Kernel Sentence Patterns, Conditional Sentences, and Analysis of Matrices), one very relevant topic of mispronunciation - its causes as well as remedy, and one topic related to linguistic skills, viz. reading, which has been discussed at length keeping in view that it is the most useful as well as the most convenient of all skills for students. This skill related topic has been included because it was realised that the information given will enhance the efficacy of reading not only in English but also in the mother tongue.
