POINT & UNIT: A Tactical Memoir by Two Very Small Dogs
Day seventy-nine. The kennel smelled like bleach, wet concrete, and the slow erosion of hope. Then a family of four walked in, a clipboard was signed, a card was swiped, and two very small dogs were redeployed to a post they had not requested, with a unit they had not vetted, under conditions they could not have anticipated.
Meet Point. Eight pounds of coiled alertness. A Chihuahua-Miniature Pinscher mix who handles reconnaissance, threat assessment, and perimeter security, and who has never once retreated from a threat he could see.
Meet Unit. Twelve pounds of strategic mass. A Chihuahua-Pug mix who handles food location, food acquisition, food inventory, and the occasional morale operation, mostly conducted from a horizontal position.
Together they look like a before-and-after diagram for two completely different experiments, neither of which went according to plan.
Told entirely in the deadpan operational voices of two rescue dogs who insist they are not bonded but are absolutely bonded, Point & Unit is the year-one mission log of a bonded pair adjusting to civilian life with their adoptive family: the Commander, the Quartermaster, and two Small Assets who drop chicken on a reliable schedule. Across twenty-seven chapters, the operatives confront thunder they cannot bark at, a bathtub they did not consent to, a cat on a wall who is winning, a Thanksgiving turkey worth four documented interceptions, and a girl who saw past the flat face and the oversized ears and decided one small dog was worth the cheese and the blanket and a hand on his side while she read.
It is a comedy. It is also, quietly, a love letter to bonded pairs, senior dogs, and the operators whose paperwork says "feisty" and whose hearts say something else entirely.
Fans of Marley & Me, The Art of Racing in the Rain, and the deadpan absurdism of The Oatmeal will recognize the territory. Readers who have ever signed a clipboard and walked out of a shelter with a dog they "weren't going to adopt" will recognize themselves.
A novel for anyone who has ever been claimed by a small dog with a large personality. A funny, tender mission report in two voices, by two small dogs, neither of whom is going to admit how much this house matters and the Humans that occupy it.
Funny enough to read aloud. Tender enough to keep on the shelf next to the dogs we have loved. For everyone who has ever brought home a rescue and watched them figure out, slowly and on their own schedule, that they were home.
