On the Trinity is the longest and most searching of Augustine's works, some twenty years in the writing. It is his attempt to understand, so far as a mind may, the mystery the Church confesses: that God is one, and yet Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
In the first half Augustine gathers the witness of Scripture and answers those who would divide or diminish the Persons. In the second he turns inward, and finds a trace of the Trinity in the soul made after the image of God - in the mind that remembers, knows, and loves; and at the last in the mind that remembers, knows, and loves God. The work ends, as it began, in prayer.
This Sanctified Souls Press edition sets the complete text of all fifteen Books, in one volume, in the translation of Arthur West Haddan.
