Developments in technology have seen the introduction of new and improved imaging techniques in the fields of both neurological and arterial research. For example, a common method adopted to demonstrate and examine the basal perforating arteries was the cadaver microangiogram. However, this is an invasive method of investigation; future advances in medicine have sought an equally accurate and efficient technique that, in contrast, is non-invasive. §§More recently, 3-T MR imaging units have been implemented in the area of arterial brain and spinal cord imaging. As the method is relatively new, it would be useful to introduce and expand upon its potential utility in aiding future research on arterial and venous brain structures, and subsequent pathologies that can develop.
