Now that contemporary Greek democracy is consolidated and functioning, this book re-examines its foundations and original political design. Focusing on the formative 1974-81 period, it analyses the 'making' of this democracy through the differing logics of its newly emergent parties, the antithesis between charismatic leadership and bureaucratic party organization, the persistence of clientelist practice and the impact of populist discourse. At a micro-analytical level, it offers a systematic examination of the conservative Nea Demokratia (New Democracy) party which was in power until 1981, and in fact led the process to democratic consolidation. The party leadership and political personnel, the development of its internal organization structures and matters of party ideology are examined in individual chapters. By going back to the origins, Pappas is able to address broader theoretical issues such as the present state of the Greek democracy, its workings and prospects for the future. Finally, this work fills an important gap in the comparative study of democratic politics in southern Europe.
