This volume brings together a broad range of scholarship on various aspects of multilingualism in South India and Sri Lanka, particularly with respect to written sources from the pre-modern world. Although the rich linguistic diversity of both regions has long been acknowledged, the consequences of this variety on linguistic and literary developments have rarely been explored, and never with the breadth that is offered here. Our contributions examine the nature and discursive functions of multilingualism, largely from the perspective of philology, in a diverse array of literary, linguistic, and cultural contexts. Some of the contributors bring their particular expertise to bear on the mutual influence of the Sanskrit and Tamil worlds, while others examine the complex linguistic, religious, and cultural negotiations evident in the literary products of authors writing in Arabic, Pali, Sinhala, Telugu, and Malayalam. Many of them also cite and translate paradigmatic examples. This volume is an important compendium of current research on multilingualism in South India and Sri Lanka and offers avenues for understanding the materials and the communities discussed herein in the context of larger conversations about multilingualism in the pre-modern world.Ce volume présente le dernier état de la recherche sur les divers aspects du multilinguisme en Inde du Sud et au Sri Lanka dans la période prémoderne. Si l’extrême diversité linguistique de ces deux régions d’Asie tout au long de leur histoire est bien connue, les conséquences de cette diversité sur leur développement linguistique et littéraire ont rarement été étudiées pour elles-mêmes, et jamais un éventail aussi large de sources n’a été pris en considération. Les articles ici réunis s’interrogent sur la nature et la fonction du multilinguisme par l’examen philologique comparé d’univers linguistiques et littéraires variés. Plusieurs contributions apportent un regard neuf sur la question complexe des influences mutuelles entre les traditions tamoule et sanskrite. D’autres sont consacrées aux interactions multiformes – religieuses, culturelles, etc. – à l’œuvre dans les productions littéraires des communautés utilisant l’arabe, le pali, le cinghalais, le télougou et le malayalam. Nombre d’articles incluent la traduction de larges extraits des textes cités. Ce volume, qui offre une première synthèse sur la question du multilinguisme en Asie du Sud, pose les jalons d’une étude des matériaux littéraires en question et des sociétés qui les ont produits dans le contexte plus large des débats actuels sur le multilinguisme dans les sociétés prémodernes.
