As the first English romantic poet, Thomas Chatterton was also one of the first “accursed” poets. As talented as he was precocious, yet poor and an orphan – he had to rely on his craftiness to free himself from his miserable condition – his life was ultimately destined to end in failure, insanity and self-destruction. He embodied all of the fantasies which were to inspire romanticism. He was also one of Western literature’s greatest forgers.Chatterton has left behind a complex and singular work, penned half in modern English and half in a pseudo-medieval English which he attributed to an imaginary monk, Thomas Rowley, who was a contemporary of Villon. He produced forged medieval manuscripts that fooled even Horace Walpole, who was then at the pinnacle of the British literary world. Chatterton’s hoax worked so well that he could no longer rid himself of it. On 24 August 1770, in London, after having tried in vain to make a living from his writing, he poisoned himself in a garret on Brooke Street, at the age of seventeen years and nine months.
