Among the Mexican muralists painting in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, Jose Clemente Orozco's work was possibily one of the strongest and most politically charged. From his first commission, "Prometheus" at Pamona College and his political work at the New School for Social Research in New York, to his masterpiece, "The Epic of American Civilisation" at Dartmouth College, Orozoc's stinging characteristics of hypocrisy, greed and oppression challenged conventional views to an extent that demands were made that his works be destroyed. All of Orozco's North American work is presented in this text, with discussions on his life and influences as well as his place among other Mexican artists and his impact on the art of the 1960s and 1970s.
