Anotace knihy
The iron industry was the catalyst for the industrial revolution, and without iron none of the great engineering achievements of the Victorian age would have been possible. The book explains how this happened. "The Iron Industry" charts the growth of iron marking from the middle ages, covering the importation of blast-furnace methods in the fifteenth century, the adoption of coke as a fuel in the eighteenth century, and the invention of mass-produced steel in the nineteenth century. The developing techniques of ironmaking, all explained in a non-techinical style, make a story in their own right, as do the experiences of masters and workmen who laboured at the furances and forges. The book is illustrated wtih the places and products most associated with the industry.
