The motivation for this thesis was to find, by a literaturereview, determinants thatcould show if the concept masscustomization can be used successfully to implement theindividualized printed newspaper. With the individualizednewspaper, newspaper companies can address developments in theirbusiness environment which have lead to a significant decline intheir readership. The individualized newspaper is in a new approachwhich provides the opportunity for publishers to counter thatdecline, and potentially create new sources of income. It followsthe slogan of editors in the 70s, \"Give readers what they want\"(Gladney, 1996). But in the 70s this was not possible due to a lackof visionary thinking and concepts, plus the unavailability ofappropriate technology. It took almost three decades for thedigital printing technologies and information and communicationsystems to reach a sufficient level of maturity to break throughthese barriers. Concurrent with the technological evolution theconcept of \"Mass Customization\" was developed. This describes amethod which enables companies to offer individual products orservices to the masses. The subject of this thesis has been toinvestigate the opportunity of using the concept of \"MassCustomization\" to bring to fruition the individualized newspaperas a tangible product.
