Hebrews was written to Christians under pressure to turn back from Christ toward what was familiar. Its answer is not merely that Christianity is better, but that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of everything that came before Hebrews: God Has Spoken in His Son follows the argument of Hebrews from beginning to end, examining how the author uses Israel's Scriptures, priesthood, sacrifices, covenant, wilderness generation, and promises to demonstrate the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. Jesus is greater than the angels, greater than Moses, and the perfect High Priest who has entered the true sanctuary on behalf of His people. His once-for-all sacrifice accomplishes what the repeated sacrifices of the old covenant could never accomplish. Because His work is complete, believers are called not to retreat, but to draw near to God, hold fast their confession, encourage one another, and endure in faith. Rather than treating Hebrews as a collection of difficult warning passages and isolated theological statements, this study follows its sustained argument and allows each passage to contribute to the whole. Along the way, it examines some of the book's most debated questions: apostasy, perseverance, Sabbath rest, Melchizedek, the new covenant, the meaning of Christ's sacrifice, and the nature of faith. Hebrews ultimately directs the reader toward one great reality: God has spoken decisively in His Son, and there is nowhere greater to go.
