Hans Keller (1919-1985), musician and writer - but also psychologist, sociologist and polemicist - dominated British musical life during the 40 years which followed World War II. His influence, on creative musicians and ordinary music-lovers alike, was wide-ranging - immeasurably increased by his activities in broadcasting. His work in radio spanned 30 years, 20 of which saw his employment in a variety of senior posts at the BBC. A highly individual and somewhat controversial figure, Keller became a familiar voice to Third Programme and Radio 3 listeners through his broadcast talks, discussions and lectures; while for composers and performers, his original ideas were a profound influence on a whole generation. This study of Keller's BBC work provides a portrait of the changing face of British broadcasting seen through the work of one of its most significant personalities. Starting with an examination of Keller's early psychological interests, and the evolution of his method of 'functional analysis' of music (with which the BBC was intimately concerned), the book charts the contribution Keller made to British music throughout his BBC years. Also explored in detail are the successive crises of the Third Programme and its replacement with Radio 3, together with Keller's leading role in opposing the decline of the BBC's cultural idealism. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, this study provides insight into the workings and development of the BBC and shows the effect of Keller's mind and strength of character on the most powerful musical institution in 20th-century Britain.
