Can you leave home without ever truly leaving it behind?

FRÉDÉRIC: The Boy Who Carried Home With Him tells the true story of Frédéric Chopin, the remarkable Polish boy who grew into one of history's greatest composers for the piano.

Born in 1810 in Żelazowa Wola and raised in Warsaw, Frédéric grew up surrounded by family, conversation, teachers, visitors, and music. He began composing when he was very young, and one of his pieces was published when he was only seven years old. Before long, audiences were recognizing him as an extraordinary young musician.

But Frédéric's story is about more than talent.

At twenty, he left Poland expecting that he would travel, perform, build a career, and eventually return home. His friends gave him a silver cup containing Polish earth so he could carry a little piece of his homeland with him. Soon afterward, political upheaval changed everything, and Frédéric would never see Poland again.

He eventually settled in Paris, where he became celebrated as a pianist and composer. Yet Poland remained present in his mazurkas, polonaises, rhythms, memories, and musical imagination. His music could whisper, sing, rage, dance, and remember.

Through an accessible illustrated narrative and carefully selected listening suggestions, young readers discover the person behind the famous name: a funny child, a devoted son and brother, a sensitive pianist, and a composer who carried the sounds of home wherever he went.

When Chopin died in Paris at thirty-nine, his body remained in France, but his heart was returned to Poland and eventually placed in the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw. His story becomes a moving reflection on music, identity, memory, belonging, and what it truly means to go home.

Part of the Little Composer Books series, FRÉDÉRIC gives children an inviting way to meet Chopin before encountering the legend.
