Following studies at the Institute of Folklore - European Ethnology/ University of Innsbruck, the aim of folklore studies is to document university work and subsequently to investigate relevant topics in a pluralistic society, including cultural and religious competence. St. Nicholas embodies Christian values. His legend goes back to Bishop Nicholas from Myra on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, who is said to have once helped people in need with numerous miracles and donations. St. Nicholas is therefore still a great role model when it comes to donations and giving.During the Christmas season, St. Nicholas has to contend with a strong competitor who, apart from his appearance (red coat, red cap and beard), doesn't have much in common with the former Bishop of Myra. This is, of course, Santa Claus, who has long since been completely appropriated by the advertising and consumer goods industry. St. Nicholas has much more to offer: central Christian values such as charity and selfless help, especially towards vulnerable and poor people.
