We get it. Losing your parents is the natural order of things but who says we aren't supposed to write about it? Evidently many people thought that it was unnecessary as there is a paucity of literature on the subject of being and or becoming an orphaned adult. We think of orphans as poor, unwanted, abandoned, as children. Not as adults who are in their mid to later stages in life.
There have been several books, studies, and research articles on the subject of grieving and death and dying but as we see it there is a lack of resources available for adult orphans. Our goal is to provide the reader a practical guide for what has been helpful for us as we navigate the world as adult orphans. We hope to gain your trust and build connection through our vulnerability as we share our stories and the stories of others, humor, insight, and guidance that can be useful during your grieving process.
This book will include stories about our lived experiences with hospice care in rural Minnesota and rural Montana (our fathers) and the sudden death of a parent (our mothers). We will explore how relationships with siblings change and the importance of capturing memories and retaining family history. We will provide information about connected losses or triggers and debunk some of the popular beliefs about what some of the current literature provides about grief and the grieving process.
