The dominant view in the field of voter turnoutresearch is that we have established robust patternsand know relatively well why turnout is higher insome countries than in others. Key variables forexplaining cross-national variation in voter turnoutare compulsory voting, electoral system, level ofeconomic development, unicameralism, size of country, and literacy rate. By conducting a comprehensiveresearch strategy involving both general andtime-specific cross-sectional analyses, this studytests a series of research hypotheses on datasetsthat spans 90 countries across a long time period(1950-2000). The results indicate that the majorityof the determinants behind cross-national variationin voter turnout are time-specific. This means thatwe cannot (as previous research has done) discuss thedeterminants behind cross-national variation in voterturnout without taking the time dimension intoaccount. Only very few determinants, like compulsoryvoting, economic development, flow of information, district size and equality in the distribution ofincome can be said cause variation in turnout acrosscountries irrespective of time.
