This book is the first to focus specifically on the role of museum objects in history exhibitions about the Nazi era, the Second World War, and the Holocaust. Over recent decades, German and Austrian exhibition-makers have engaged in significant programmes of object collection, linking remarkable personal stories to apparently unremarkable objects. At the same time, exhibition-makers have come to understand the degree to which the National Socialist era was experienced materially, through the loss, acquisition, imposition, destruction, and re-purposing of objects. The study also devotes significant space to the legacies of National Socialism in the decades after 1945. Forgetting and remembering in the family and in the public sphere, living with traumatic after-effects, and uncovering the Nazi past: all these experiences also involved encounters with material culture. The book thus contributes to wider debates about relationships between the human and object worlds.
