Anotace knihy
Edinburgh's first tramway network was a horse-drawn service from Haymarket to Bernard Street, opened in 1871. In January 1888, a cable system came into operation. With amalgamations with the electric Leith system, and a takeover by Edinburgh Corporation, the trams were all electrified in 1923. Until 1937, the tram network was still being expanded. By November 1956, the trams had been relegated to the history books, and Edinburgh relied on its buses. By the start of the twenty-first century, it was realised that Edinburgh needed investment in its public transport, and the scheme to operate trams once more came to the fore. On 31 May 2014, trams once again operated in Edinburgh. Despite costing some two times its initial estimate, and only half the route being constructed, the trams are proving to be busy. The new route goes from Edinburgh airport to York Place.
