Focusing on both the prospects and pitfalls of intellectual decolonization, this book centers Africa as a subject of study and presents a plethora of ideas, reflections, and possible actions pointing to why the academic project of teaching (and researching) about Africa still requires an overhaul. Despite the long history of decolonization as a 'third world' political project, decolonization as an intellectual project has gained tremendous momentum in recent times, signaled by movements such as #RhodesMustFall, #BlackInTheIvory, and Why Is My Curricula So White among others. These movements situate the coloniality of power within ongoing practices in academia and seek to disrupt systemic racism and oppressive structures of knowledge creation. In a thought-provoking manner, the book elucidates and fuses ideas together to produce nuanced pedagogical advances in the service of students, academics, and educators. The book contributes ideas on how teachers of critical praxis ought to navigate systems, curricula, and academic contexts that have incubated and perpetuated a colonial toxicity that undermines Black agency and epistemic justice. Also, the book reflects on the roles academics play in everyday knowledge production and dissemination, their assumed indispensability and alacrity in the academic project of teaching and learning, and how to animate a decolonial praxis in academic spaces and universities that have increasingly become a battleground of the postcolonial project.
