Anotace knihy

The purpose of this book is to investigate the decentralization process in Indonesia and explore the connections between good governance and sustainable society, especially in middle-income developing countries in Southeast Asia. Recent scholarship has begun to explore the links between ideas of good governance political stability, government effectiveness, rule of law, regulatory quality, transparency, and the control of corruption and broader benefits to society. This book adds to the growing literature by introducing current empirical research being conducted at the University of Groningen on decentralization within particular policy sectors of Indonesia. Conducted by a group of Indonesian PhD candidates and their supervisors at the SInGA program, this research focuses on topics such as decentralization and improving access and quality in education, governance and economic growth, the role of leadership in promoting ethical behavior and good governance within institutions, and effective corporate governance and the control of corruption. For each of these studies, an implicit link is drawn between the contribution that good governance in the policy sector may have on societal well-being and the goal of creating a sustainable society for future generations. The book is organized into four main parts, beginning with theoretical reflections on decentralization and governance for sustainable society and followed by three empirical sections: decentralization and policy making, the challenges of creating sustainable futures in decentralized cities, and using governance to limit opportunities for corruption in decentralized environments. This book will be of interest in both the academic and policy communities among those studying the links between patterns of governance and societal outcomes.
