Anotace knihy

This volume delves into the intersection of environmental humanities, the study of cultures in human societies, and borderlands/frontiers in (post)imperial contexts. It asks about the origins and mechanisms of destructive practices that unfolded in the cultural and environmental margins within (post)imperial or inter-imperial spaces. Its focus lies on various transformative processes, characterizable as destructive, impacting interrelatedly both the environmental and cultural 'other'. Through case studies from various disciplines, each focusing on a 'peripheral' region, we seek to offer fresh perspectives on how imperial dynamics disrupted entangled environmental-societal complexities. We critically engage with the term 'destruction' itself by analyzing competing environmental imaginaries. Defying easy definition and questioning a destruction-construction dichotomy, we argue for a dialectical relationship between destruction and construction and note their causal and temporal interconnectedness. This work's relevance lies in its nuanced understanding of historical dynamics that keep harming environments and people considered marginal in imperial eyes. This book will appeal to scholars of history, literature, art, and related disciplines.
