Anotace knihy
"Dark Laughter" is a profound work of American modernism that delves into the psychological restlessness and disillusionment of the post-World War I era. The novel follows Bruce Dudley, who abandons his conventional life and career as a journalist in Chicago to seek a more authentic, primitive existence. Moving to Indiana and taking an alias, Dudley finds employment in a wheel factory, where he becomes increasingly aware of the emotional and spiritual void within the white middle class.
Sherwood Anderson utilizes a rhythmic, stream-of-consciousness style to explore the tensions between industrial conformity and human instinct. The narrative is defined by the contrast between the repressed, mechanical lives of its protagonists and the vital, uninhibited laughter of the African American community living nearby. As Dudley enters into a complex affair with Aline Grey, the wife of his employer, the novel examines themes of sexual frustration, the search for identity, and the rejection of social norms.
As a significant piece of 1920s literature, "Dark Laughter" captures the zeitgeist of the Jazz Age and remains an important study of the American psyche and the cultural shifts of the early twentieth century.
