On the day after D-Day, RAF pilot Holland was shot down over France. Plunging 1,200 feet when the engine died, he managed to bale out just seconds before the crash, although his parachute failed to open. Landing in a tree saved his life, even though he was dangling upside-down, 15 feet in the air, with German soldiers rushing to his position. Holland managed to evade capture for months, and made it back to his hometown of Cambridge.
