Anotace knihy

Cuba: Promise and Collapse offers a sweeping chronological account of the political and economic forces that have shaped Cuba from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Beginning with colonial rule under Spain and the wars of independence that ignited the dream of sovereignty, the book traces the fragile birth of the republic, the turbulence of dictatorship and reform, and the dramatic rupture of the 1959 Revolution. It examines how ideology, sugar, foreign trade, and external alliances became both the lifeblood and the Achilles' heel of the Cuban nation, revealing the structural vulnerabilities that repeatedly undermined Cuba's development.

Moving through the pivotal turning points of modern Cuban history, the narrative explores the U.S. military intervention and its economic impact; the corruption and instability of the early republic; the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado; the rise of Fulgencio Batista; the Auténtico era under Ramón Grau San Martín and Carlos Prío Socarrás; the gangster‑led groups that emerged from the 1933 revolution; and the maverick leadership of Eduardo "Eddy" Chibás. It then examines Batista's coup and descent into tyranny, the Revolution's radical restructuring of society and economy, the dismantling of the market system, the Soviet lifeline and its collapse, the tenuous recovery of the Special Period, the partnership with Venezuela, the unfulfilled promises of Raúl Castro's reforms, and the dire economic situation facing Cuba today. Through this detailed historical arc, the book illuminates the profound economic and human costs of revolutionary experimentation and the enduring challenges confronting the Cuban people.
