Anotace knihy
Set in 1989 in and around the fictional City of Canaan Lake, Colored Hearing follows Detective Wyatt Bybee as a long-buried case begins to reopen after excavation crews uncover a pair of Converse All-Star shoes believed to belong to Russell Gray, a twenty-one-year-old Black man who disappeared in 1969 and was long presumed drowned.
As Russell's parents, Nona and Ram Gray, are pulled back into the grief they survived, new evidence begins to contradict the official story. A shoe, a letter, biological material, red clay, skeletal remains, and a widow's confession force Canaan Lake to confront what its police department may have buried twenty years earlier.
Part cold-case drama, part family tragedy, and part public reckoning, Colored Hearing examines the machinery that protects official stories: police files, public silence, racial fear, institutional loyalty, legal strategy, and the emotional cost of asking a grieving family to identify what they were forced to bury without a body.
The play asks whether truth can restore anything after twenty years of damage, who gets protected by "closure," who gets endangered by evidence, and what it costs Black families to demand answers from the very systems that failed them.
