Zero rejection under the RTE Act has put children with intellectual disabilities into mainstream classrooms. Enrolment came first; the teaching was meant to follow. Capable Minds is about the teaching.
Written for special educators and B.Ed and M.Ed students bound for inclusive and special schools, it shows what inclusion asks of a teacher in practice: how to tell whether a child is participating or merely present, how to read behaviour as a message about work she cannot do, how to plan and pace a lesson so that she learns with the class, and how to work with parents and the school when resources are thin.
Each chapter moves from principle to practice and says plainly where the evidence is strong and where it is thin.
This book exists for the teacher who stands in front of fifty-three children knowing that three are drowning, and no map for what to do about it. Every child has capacity; the work is to find where it sits and teach to it as that child requires.
