This book tells the story of Buffalo Bird Woman when she was a young girl, a Hidatsa Indian born about 1839. Through her true story, readers learn what it was like to be part of a Native American community that lived along the Missouri River in North Dakota. The tribe depended more on its agriculture for food and survival than hunting. Buffalo Bird Girl helped plant crops, tended the fields, scared off birds and other animals as well as helped dry and store the food. Her life had moments of excitement and terror, such as when the Sioux attacked to steal food and horses. The book also reveals the fun times along with the chores. The story is based on the work of Gilbert L. Wilson who documented and wrote three books with Buffalo Bird Woman about her life. The story is illustrated with Nelson's artwork as well as archival images. It includes a timeline.
