Biomedical engineering is the youngest of the major engineering disciplines. Unlike civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering fields with centuries of codified knowledge and well defined boundaries biomedical engineering emerged only in the latter half of the twentieth century. It was born from a practical need: physicians encountered problems that no single traditional engineer could solve, and engineers encountered biological systems that violated every assumption they had learned in schoolThe early practitioners were pioneers,they built the first pacemakers in machine shops, adapted radar technology for ultrasound imaging, and sewed Dacron grafts into diseased aortas. They were brilliant, resourceful, and often reckless by modern standards.
