At what cost should a life be saved? This question poses a challenge to modern medicine, which is resuscitating patients despite potentially debilitating effects. Such is the case with cerebrovascular accident (CVA) victims . With 130,000 new cases every year, this genuine public health issue is the leading cause of acquired disability and the third most common cause of death in France. Very recently, a specific treatment has made it possible to save lives while limiting CVA’s after-effects. Yet such treatment advances are still subject to debate, because they neither cure this condition, nor always prevent severe disabilities. Based on observations made in hospitals, the aim of this book is to help readers better evaluate the actions doctors are taking in these situations. It describes in specific terms how such patients are managed and clarifies the ethical problems raised. Should the treatments be limited or stopped in the most serious cases? What coping mechanisms should be provided to victims and their families? How can their sufferings be alleviated? What role should palliative care play? Since CVAs most commonly affect elderly persons or end-of-life seniors in fragile health, such practices call into question the present national health policy. To what ends and by what logic are we developing – without actually saying so and perhaps even without realizing it – a senior-specific healthcare system? What treatments do we want for our beloved elders and for ourselves later on?
